====== Internet & TV ====== === Internet in the dorm === Internet in the dorm is provided **exclusively by [[https://www.pyur.com/|Pÿur]]**. Other providers are currently **not available or only possible with great effort**. There used to be a **discount for residents**, but it has since **been discontinued**. Pÿur currently offers the following **speed tiers**: * **50 Mbit/s** * **250 Mbit/s** * **500 Mbit/s** * **1000 Mbit/s** For normal use (streaming, online meetings, gaming, etc.), **250 Mbit/s is more than enough**. Higher plans rarely make a noticeable difference, since the actual speed in the dorm often doesn’t reach the theoretical maximum anyway. ---- === Wi-Fi & Router === With your Pÿur contract, you usually receive a **WLAN cable box**, which combines **modem and router in one device**. This router is **preconfigured** and ready to use, making setup very simple. Typical features of the **Pÿur WLAN cable box**: * Supports **Wi-Fi 5 (WLAN AC)** or **Wi-Fi 6 (WLAN AX)**, depending on the model * Multiple Gigabit Ethernet ports (**4x 1 Gbit**, some models with **1x 2.5 Gbit**) * **2x telephone ports** for analog phones or fax devices * Integrated **DOCSIS modem** for cable internet * Secure and stable connection, easy setup via web interface or WPS A common model is the **Sagemcom F@st 3896**, which supports **Wi-Fi 6** and up to **2.5 Gbit/s LAN**. ---- === Using your own router === If you prefer, you can also use your own router: * **FRITZ!Box (Cable)** – recommended if you want more features such as advanced network settings, DECT phones, or better Wi-Fi coverage. Make sure the model supports **cable connections (DOCSIS)**. * You can **rent a FRITZ!Box directly from Pÿur** (simple and preconfigured), or **buy/rent one externally** – though this is usually a bit more expensive. > ⚠️ Note: Only **routers compatible with cable internet** will work in the dorm. > DSL-only models are **not supported**. ---- === Tip for Shared Apartments (WGs) === In most shared apartments, one roommate signs the internet contract and sets up the router. Wi-Fi usually covers both rooms without any issues. If the second roommate also wants a **LAN (Ethernet) connection**, this can be done easily using a **DLAN/Powerline adapter**. **DLAN (also called Powerline)** allows network data to be sent through the **existing electrical wiring** in the apartment. You simply plug one adapter near the router and another in the other room — both connect via LAN cable. It’s a **practical solution** when you need a wired connection but can’t run a cable across rooms. ---- === Television (TV) === The dorm has a **cable connection**. You can optionally book **TV service** through Pÿur. This costs **extra** and is only needed if you actually want to watch TV. ---- === Reliability & User Experience === Pÿur is generally reliable, but there can occasionally be **short outages or connection issues**. **Tips if problems occur:** * Try **restarting your router** first. * Ask your neighbors whether the issue is **dorm-wide** or **only affects your room**. * Larger outages are usually **reported in the dorm’s group chat**. When it comes to **ping** (for example, in gaming), cable isn’t the absolute best, but it’s **fast and stable enough** for most uses, including gaming. ---- === Mobile Network Reception === **Mobile reception** inside the building can be **weak**, especially in **hallways** or **rooms without a balcony**. This is due to the strong wall insulation. **Tip:** * **Balconies or terraces** usually have better reception. * **Telekom** generally offers the **best coverage** inside the building. ---- === Community Hotspot === There is a **community Wi-Fi hotspot** in the **common rooms**. It’s suitable for **basic browsing or email**, but not for **video streaming or online meetings**, as the bandwidth is limited. ---- === Fiber Internet === A **fiber connection** is **not available** in the dorm at this time. ---- **Summary:** > - Internet provider: **Pÿur** > - No alternative providers available > - Recommended plan: **250 Mbit/s** for typical use > - Included: **Pÿur WLAN cable box (Wi-Fi 5 or 6)** > - Optional: **FRITZ!Box Cable** router (rental or own device) > - TV via cable connection (extra cost) > - Tip for shared apartments: use **DLAN adapters** for wired LAN > - Occasional outages – router restart usually helps > - Limited mobile reception, Telekom works best > - Community hotspot available for light use
